Cool water, hard rock, and the repeating line of the surf are reduced to a few decisive notes painted with the immediacy of being there.

A painter of the American West whose direct experience of desert, coast, and snow gives his landscapes their authority.
Matt Smith was born in Kansas City and grew up in Arizona. He later lived and painted in Europe before returning to the landscapes of the American West.
Working extensively en plein air, Smith seeks places where the influence of people falls away. His paintings are built to carry the heat of the desert, the force of the coast, or the chill of a mountain snowfall.
This address preserves the earlier Prix de West listing. Learn more about these paintings here, or watch Matt speak about working far from the road.
